SAFE CU RENEWS SUPPORT OF ACADEMIC DECATHLON
North Highlands, Calif. May 18, 2011 – SAFE Credit Union shared its appreciation for our next generation of leaders at a special luncheon this month. As part of SAFE’s sponsorship of the Sacramento County Academic Decathlon, the credit union hosted the teams of three local high schools, decathlon coaches, and school district administrators. SAFE provided $10,000 in scholarships for Academic Decathlon participants this year, and sponsored the Rio Linda, Highlands, and Foothill High School teams.
The luncheon celebrated the students’ success and showed appreciation for their hard-working teachers. The student decathletes were presented prizes from SAFE. And, SAFE President and CEO Henry Wirz announced SAFE’s decision to sponsor the 2012 Decathlon, and to once again sponsor the three teams.
"Making an investment in your education is one of our top ten steps to financial well-being," said Wirz. "By rewarding outstanding academic achievement, we hope to encourage their peers to appreciate the concrete benefits of education. We want to be a financial literacy resource, of course; but more than that, we hope to share the joy of learning in general with the community."
The Academic Decathlon sponsorship is just one of the many resources that SAFE has extended to community youth. The credit union offers $10,000 in scholarships annually to exceptional college-bound seniors. Rio Linda High School also partnered with SAFE to open a successful on-campus branch in 2005. Students intern over the summer with SAFE to learn about financial wellness, marketing, and branch operations, so they can successfully run their own branch during the school year.
Established in 1940, SAFE Credit Union maintains assets in excess of $1.6 billion and serves more than 150,000 members through 21 branches in the greater Sacramento region.
