SMART MONEY’S ON ACADEMIC DECATHLON

SAFE Continues Support of High School Event, Invites Other Businesses to Join

Sacramento, Calif. Jan. 19, 2011 — SAFE Credit Union is challenging other Sacramento businesses to join in supporting a 31-year tradition among area high schools — the Academic Decathlon. Restricted funding makes it difficult for many schools to participate in this valuable event.

This year, SAFE has donated $10,000 to sponsor the Decathlon, and $4,500 to support three local schools. The donation also covers scholarships for winning students. SAFE’s support for the event has remained a longtime commitment for the credit union. This funding means that teams from Rio, Foothill, and Highlands high schools will be able to compete against other schools on the subjects of economics, language and literature, music, science, art, mathematics, and social science. The competition culminates in the high-energy team event called the Super Quiz which is open to the public.

SAFE is issuing a challenge now to encourage businesses to donate early this year so that schools can continue to participate in this valuable personal and educational experience. Each $1,500 donated by a business can sponsor one school, covering fees, travel costs and study supplies.

“The Decathlon celebrates academic talent, and more than that, it gives outstanding students a fun, competitive, and rewarding venue to match their skills against other exceptional students. For SAFE and all Sacramento-area businesses, supporting the Decathlon is investing in our young people,” said SAFE President and CEO Henry Wirz.

Each Academic Decathlon has a theme, and this year’s is the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Teams of students advance in the competition by correctly answering questions from a moderator. Last year’s winning school was Folsom High, which then advanced to the State Finals. The annual event is organized through the Sacramento County Office of Education.

For more information on adopting a team for the Academic Decathlon, supporters can call Craig Irish, Coordinator, at (916) 228-2660.
