ICYMI: GoodDay Sacramento Spotlights Second Annual Summer Worn Flag Drive Ahead of Memorial Day

Folsom, Calif. – (May 28, 2025) – Just ahead of Memorial Day, GoodDay Sacramento aired a live segment at the Aerospace Museum of California highlighting SAFE Credit Union’s second annual American flag collection drive.

To honor those who have fallen while in military service, SAFE Credit Union employee group, VALOR (Veterans and Loved Ones Resource) began its drive Friday, May 23 (Memorial Day weekend), inviting the public to bring in old and damaged flags for proper retirement.

VALOR is accepting worn flags at the credit union’s 17 branches in the Sacramento area, at its headquarters in Folsom and at the Aerospace Museum of California in McClellan Park, through Wednesday, July 30. The collections coincide with Flag Day (Saturday, June 14), and the Fourth of July.

“A lot of worn flags sometimes don’t get retired properly,” SAFE’s VALOR Executive Sponsor Lawrence Lomeli shared with GoodDay’s viewers. “All of the community can bring in their flags. You don’t have to be a member of SAFE to bring them in and we’d be happy to properly retire them.”

Once collected, Folsom’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6604 will fold and prepare the flags to be given to Folsom’s American Legion Post 362. The legion, as well as Scouts from the Sacramento area Golden Empire Council, will conduct and arrange retirement ceremonies under the U.S. Flag Code.

SAFE Credit Union, a not-for-profit financial institution, began serving personnel in 1940 at the base that later became McClellan Air Force Base. Although being a member of the credit union no longer requires military affiliation, SAFE continues to celebrate its history and support its many employees and members who are active National Guard and reservists, veterans, and families of active and retired military.
