For Valentine’s Day: Advice on Matters of the Heart and Money, Avoiding ‘Romance Scams’

February 03, 2026

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, SAFE Credit Union’s financial experts are holding free webinars for those looking to get the best out of love and money – including how to avoid “romance scams.”

“It’s OK for couples to talk about finances. It’s no longer taboo,” says SAFE Credit Union Community Development Specialist and Certified Financial Educator Savannah Brown. “To have a healthy partnership, you have to build trust by talking about how you each approach money and ensure you’re both heading toward the same goals.”

In February, Brown will present two upcoming free, no-pressure (online) webinars open to the public about relationships and money. They are “Couples and Cash: Navigating Money Conversations in Relationships,” scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 10 and “Protect Your Heart & Wallet: Avoiding Romance Scams” on Thursday, Feb. 19. Each 35-minute webinar starts at 11 a.m. and is followed by a 10-minute Q & A session. To register visit here or at safecu.org/events.

The “Couples and Cash” webinar centers on love and money topics many people often mistakenly miss or avoid such as establishing a foundation of trust, navigating different spending habits, creating common goals, and overcoming financial challenges and conflict resolution, explains Brown.

SAFE Credit Union Community Development Specialist and Certified Financial Educator Savannah Brown presents during a ‘Budget Cents’ seminar to Sacramento State University students.

“This webinar is a good reminder that communicating about money, the good, bad and everything in between, is a great habit to build,” says Brown, adding it’s all about establishing trust and creating transparency in relationships.

The “Protect Your Heart & Wallet” webinar, says Brown, focuses on a topic that unfortunately needs to be visited more and more in today’s digital landscape – regularly circulating “romance scams.” Brown will give insight into understanding AI-powered scams, identifying red flags, using defense strategies and best practices, while reviewing real-world examples and case studies.

“We are seeing a rise in these 'romance scams' especially with advancements in AI,” Brown says. “Scammers get away with this because they target people who feel lonely and impersonate a love interest and create deepfake imagery that looks and feels real. They ask for money with some kind of promised benefit. Before we know it, we’re losing our hard-earned cash.”

Brown combines her extensive financial and facilitating background to create informative financial webinars and community events. Brown works with several community and nonprofit organizations including Saint John’s Program for Real Change and City of Refuge of Sacramento to help increase financial wellbeing for those they serve.

SAFE Credit Union offers several free financial webinars on a variety of topics each month to its members and the public as part of its commitment to provide no-cost financial education to people of all ages.
