SAFE CU AWARDS $10,000 IN LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

North Highlands, Calif. April 28, 2011 – SAFE continued its commitment to improving the financial well-being of the community it serves by providing scholarships to ten exceptional local students. As part of SAFE’s scholarship program, the college-bound high school seniors were each awarded $1,000 for their outstanding achievements.

This spring, the large pool of applicants represented 40 high schools and 27 cities. Recipients were chosen based on grade-point averages, financial need, community service, letters of recommendation, and personal compositions on how their education will benefit their community.
This year’s recipients include:

Daniel Cattolica and Connor Quinn, Bella Vista High School
Jared Fong and Grace Lau, C.K. McClatchy High School
Haile Canton, Mira Loma High School
Katrina Lund, Oak Ridge High School
Kim Ho, Sheldon High School
Kimberly Saepan, Hiram W. Johnson High School
Sarah Dyer, Folsom High School
Alexandria Lee, Roseville High School

SAFE’s scholarship committee was impressed by the level of volunteerism from this year’s applicants. Scholarship recipient Connor Quinn, for example, founded and runs I Care Kibera Foundation (ICK), a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing clean water provisions to residents of Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya. Connor also spent a summer volunteering in other impoverished areas of South Africa to better understand water access needs.

The scholarship program underscores SAFE’s dedication to giving back to the community, said SAFE President and CEO Henry Wirz. “We want to help students invest in their education,” said Wirz, “so that they can use their knowledge and passion to make an impact on the communities in which they will live, work, and volunteer.”

The SAFE Scholarship Program started in 2001 and is open annually to students who live or attend school in Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, Yuba, Sutter, Amador, Butte, Contra Costa, Nevada, San Joaquin, Solano, or El Dorado Counties.
