SAFE Credit Union awards grants to two organizations providing veterans with career training

FOLSOM, Calif. (May 14, 2021) – Two Sacramento-area programs that assist military veterans transition to civilian careers each received $20,000 from SAFE Credit Union as part of the credit union’s grant program.

Soil Born Farms and Allegiant Giving will use the funds to support programs providing skills and knowledge to veterans seeking to apply their military experience in new careers.

“One of SAFE’s philanthropic pillars is military personnel and veterans, so it’s with great pleasure that we assist these two organizations with their programs,” says SAFE Credit Union Community and Government Relations Manager Amanda Merz. “Veterans bring so much to the work force, and with the additional training Soil Born Farms and Allegiant Giving provide, they are able to enhance their experiences with new career skills.”

Soil Born Farms

Soil Born Farms, a nonprofit urban agriculture and education project in Rancho Cordova, will apply the grant to Veteran Field Days. These events introduce veterans to careers in sustainable agriculture while providing restorative experiences. Participants will be encouraged to engage in continued agriculture skills building opportunities at Soil Born Farms, including applying to the accredited Farmer Apprentice program run by Soil Born Farms’ partners at Center for Land-Based Learning.

“Our aim is to introduce veterans to career pathways in the fields of sustainable agriculture, health and wellness, nutrition, culinary arts, food services and distribution, environmental conservation, and community organizing,” says Shawn Harrison, founder and co-director of Soil Born Farms. “A parallel goal is to recognize the importance of mental health, social connection and physical wellbeing for our veterans.”
