SAFE representatives attend 2018 Hike the Hill event in Washington, DC

FOLSOM, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2018) – SAFE Credit Union recently participated in this year’s Hike the Hill event in Washington, D.C. to help educate decision makers on credit union issues.

Hike the Hill is a grassroots program sponsored by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues.

SAFE’s Community and Advocacy Engagement Manager Amanda Merz and President and CEO Dave Roughton represented SAFE Credit Union at the event.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to meet with our elected officials to bring up issues that make a difference in the lives of our members,” said Merz.

Amanda Merz and Dave Roughton met with Reps. Ami BeraMerz and Roughton met with various California legislators or their staff, including Reps. Ami Bera, John Garamendi, and Doris Mastui, as well as Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris.

Main topics discussed during the two-day event in late September were legislation to cover data security and breach notifications as well as consumer protections for Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) lending, a program for financing energy efficient and renewable energy improvements for homes and businesses.

Hike the Hill participants also discussed regulatory issues with the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (BCFP).

“It was exciting to be able to lend our voices to the conversation,” Merz said. “We were able to help legislators see the direct impact their decisions have on the lives of their constituents as well as credit union members.”

SAFE continues to be a strong advocate for policies and legislation favorable to credit unions and the financial strength of its members.
