SAFE Corporate office merits green recognition

Sacramento, Calif. March 13, 2009 – SAFE Credit Union’s corporate headquarters in North Highlands, California was recently recognized by Sacramento County Business Environmental Resource Center (BERC) with official certification in Water Conservation. SAFE is a "Certified Sustainable Business." Our corporate office has already received certification in Energy Conservation, Pollution Prevention, and Solid Waste Reduction.

“It is SAFE’s mission to not only provide safe and sound financial practices, but also best practices in every aspect of our business,” said SAFE President and CEO Henry Wirz.

As part of the certification in Water Conservation, SAFE requested Sacramento Suburban Water District (SSWD) to come and conduct a complete water assessment at SAFE’s corporate headquarters, which led SAFE to implement the following improvements and enhancements:

  • Water-efficient aerators have been installed on kitchen and lavatory sinks.
  • Property irrigation is timed for early morning hours to decrease water loss from wind drift and evaporation.
  • Water meter measurements are carefully monitored, and plumbing is checked regularly.
  • Many toilets have been retrofitted, and one-gallon-per-flush diaphragms are installed on urinals.

Other improvements that led to SAFE’s qualification include:

  • Company vehicles are serviced at “zero discharge” or recycle-and-reuse car wash facilities.
  • Conserve water reminder signs are posted to encourage employees to limit water usage.
  • Window cleaning services have been reduced.
  • Dry surface cleaning methods are used for hard floors, and carpet cleaning is a natural extraction, dry cleaning process.

Energy conservation, water conservation, pollution prevention, solid waste reduction, and green building are important issues to the health of our community.
